During 2008-2009 the New Zealand Fire Service recorded 1783 fires in the kitchen/cooking area, 1472 of them in residential buildings, 961 were due to unattended cooking. We can help prevent loss of life, injury and property loss due to stove top fires. Since 1 July 2010 the New Zealand Fire Service has responded to 120 fires on stove tops. A public survey determined they may only attend 24% of possible calls to fires.
