During 2008-2009 the New Zealand Fire Service recorded 1783 fires in the kitchen/cooking area, 1472 of them in residential buildings, 961 were due to unattended cooking.

Since 1 July 2010 the New Zealand Fire Service has responded to 120 fires on stove tops. A public survey determined they may only attend 24% of possible calls to fires.
